Upgrading PHP Software Print E-mail

Like most people who build websites, scripts that are already written are found online. Its a terrific shortcut to writing all of your own scripts and perfectly acceptable a practice. One thing to think about, however, is updating these scripts.

Many of the programs that you pick up online will be updated at some point, and you will need to decide now and again whether you should update yours as well. Be aware of script updates, but make a conscious decision about whether or not the upgrade will do anything for your site. For instance, if the upgrade includes some feature that you know youll never use, forget about it. But if there was a flaw that has been correction with an upgrade, then definitely make the change. By paying attention to upgrades you are also ensuring the security of your site by avoiding it being vulnerable to hacking. And thats nasty stuff. You also need to keep in mind that sometimes a hosting company will be running and older script, so if you decide to upgrade, you could run into compatibility issues. Just check in advance before switching from PHP4 to PHP5 and things like that. If your site has alot of add ons which software like Word Press and Joomla do, then make sure theyll still work if you upgrade everything. If they wont, then you ll need to make a decision on whether you really need them or not.

Upgrading is just one of those maintenance issues that site builders face all the time and using PHP doesnt change things. While PHP scripts are very stable and upgrades tend to move slowly, it will pay to check things out now and again. It will make everything keep running very smoothly, and thats what all sites want!
